My E-mail to Pensacola Mayor and City Council
To Mayor Hayward

Dear Mayor Hayward,
With your removal of the First National Flag of the Confederacy from the Five Flags displays, you have shown yourself to be an emotional reactionary, not a deliberative leader.
Without giving the situation time to stabilize, or finding out what your constituents wanted, you followed the lead of those across the country making callous political use of a tragedy to lie about history in the interest of protecting and promoting destructive contemporary policies. In so doing, you have aided the hysterical sweep across the South to wipe out anything Confederacy related, from flags to retail items to place names to monuments to smartphone apps. There are even calls to dig up graves and remove the remains of Confederate soldiers and officers. Do you approve of that? Your actions helped to bring it about.
And whether you intended to or not, you have painted many of your good, decent constituents who respect their history and heritage with a Dylann-Roof-colored brush. Shame. You ought to know your people better than that, and respect them enough to not mischaracterize them with your assumptions.
Since your precipitous action, tens of thousands of people across the Southern states have rallied in support of Confederate heritage almost daily, to show they will not let their brave Confederate ancestors be lied about, dishonored or forgotten. The rallies and parades continue today.
Significantly, a CNN poll has verified what heritage defenders have known for decades. A huge majority of Americans -- 57 percent -- do not see the Confederate flag as a racist emblem, but a symbol of Southern regional pride -- the same pride Pensacolians showed in their city's history and heritage, until their government attempted to remove it and foist off on them some plastic, artificial, soulless "world class upside city" substitute. It wouldn't surprise me if that 57% figure was higher in Pensacola.
This is nearly identical to a 2000 Gallup poll which found that 59% of Americans say the flag is more a symbol of Southern pride, and reflects similar percentages in polls by Scripps-Howard in Texas and The University of North Carolina's Southern Focus poll. People's regard for their history has not changed despite an ongoing campaign of denigration of the flag by the NAACP and fellow travelers, and the high-handed efforts of their local and state governments.
My major concern at this time is protection of the Confederate Memorial in Lee Square. I want the city's assurance that it will not cave to emotional reactionary demands to destroy or remove the monument. Leave it exactly where it is, and protect it from vandalism and attempts at destruction.
However, I maintain an intense interest in the flag situation. I want to see it revisited. The city's "solution" of putting a state flag in a display of national flags is, frankly, bizarre, reeks of political appeasement and mangles the very significance and purpose of the Five Flags displays. I would like to see the Five Flags restored to what they should be, including the First National Flag of the Confederacy, the Stars and Bars.

A few days off
I have a pretty severe infection of my right hand from a cat scratch. Badly swollen and hurts like a sonofagun. Doc gave me an antibiotic that seems somewhat unenthusiastic about doing its job. Pain killer, hydrocodone, is better at making me violently nauseated than easing pain. But I'm struggling on. For a while I had to type one-handed, like archy. Now I can use my right hand sparingly, but just a little typing makes it ache like a sunofagun. Sooo frustrating because soooo much needs to be written about the cultural genocide of Confederate heritage. Hope to be back up to speed soon.

My Remarks to the Escambia County Commissioners
At the July 7th meeting (the section in red italics was left out so the remarks would fit in the 2-minute time limit.)
Confederates committed treason against the United States and fought to keep and entire race in bondage. This mantra, ubiquitous in the social media age, is the concoction of cultural manipulators designed to be accepted and repeated by their minions without a single neuron firing. It isn't true, because the civil war and its causes were far more complex but there is not enough time to discuss such a complicated subject here and now.
The civil war and reconstruction indelibly marked the South and set it apart in numerous significant ways. As a sub-culture of the United States, the region is home to a very large group of people -- once its major demographic -- descended from soldiers, sailors and civilians of the Confederate States of America.
For a century and a half, they have honored their ancestors with monuments, banners, place names, story and song.
Cultural genocide is the deliberate destruction of the cultural heritage of a people or nation for political, military, religious, ideological, ethnic or racial reasons.
In the wake of a horrific mass murder in Charleston, South Carolina almost three weeks ago, an orchestrated tsunami has swept across the South, targeting anything Confederate, although the shooter's motives had nothing to do with Confederate heritage.
Confederate items have been removed from shelves by retailers, flags lowered, and monuments vandalized. There have been calls to remove or destroy Confederate memorials. There is even a clamoring by the NAACP and others to prohibit Confederate flags and symbols on private property.
If you remove the flags and the Confederate monument in Pensacola, you will aid the cultural genocide of a large group of Southerners for fallacious and faithless reasons, set precedent for obliteration of other items of cultural heritage that might offend someone, from busts of Bernardo de Galvez and Andrew Jackson to the statue of Don Tristan de Luna to The Wall South and whether you intend it or not, you will be painting a multitude of good, decent constituents with a Dylann Roof-colored brush.

When Black Lives Matter....
An observation about the graffiti showing up on monuments recently...
Just as some people are more equal than others, some black lives matter more than other black lives, and the difference apparently depends on the race of the person taking them.
Just sayin'.
The graphic above was inspired by a column by Walter Williams, which began with this:
Each year, roughly 7,000 blacks are murdered. Ninety-four percent of the time, the murderer is another black person. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, between 1976 and 2011, there were 279,384 black murder victims. Thus, 7000 x 94% = 6850 black on black murders per year, or 570 per month, or 3420 every six months, which is only 26 less than all the lynchings that occurred in 86 years.
I bring this up because I've never seen a single reference to it by leftists and assorted anti-racists. Now why do you suppose that is? What would they say if they were asked to acknowledge it?
Why is it more tragic when a white cop kills a black criminal than when a black criminal kills another black? Why is it more tragic when a white lunatic kills innocent blacks than when a black criminal kills innocent blacks? Are not all the victims equally dead? Aren't their families equally devastated?
Just as some people are more equal than others, some black lives matter more than other black lives, and the difference apparently depends on the race of the person taking them.

Outlasting the Tsunami
An artificially created but nevertheless powerful antiConfederate tidal wave of the magnitude of Indonesia's 2004 tsunami, is crashing across the country, and Simpson thinks I should have stopped it in Pensacola. Wish I'd known I had such power. I would have halted Hurricane Ivan a hundred miles out in the Gulf.
Well, no, Simpson really doesn't think that. He knows better. He's just being his usual slimy self. I wonder what such utter meanness does for him.
But on to what really matters. Southerners survived the war, reconstruction, and several generations of deliberately imposed economic oppression resulting in widespread poverty with associated nutritional deficiency diseases (including but not limited to pellagra and hookworm) and early death. We will survive this war on our heritage, and we will bring it back. It may take years, decades, even generations, but we will.
We will do on the intangible level of cultural heritage what physically destroyed places have done -- rebuild. We will work to bring it back and the effort will grow easier with time, because the larger culture that surrounds and opposes us will further weaken from the cultural rot of its own making.
The decline and crumpling of the USA would have made me sad, once upon a time....
But that was then. This is now.
