Thanks, Jessie. I completely agree with you on their lack of character and honor. They are leftist ideologues, and their ideology is incompatible with truth, honor, character, scruples, etc.
I would say that what motivates the young floggers, is the classic Leftist antipathy towards the South as the repository for American Conservatism. They can't articulate it very well, though. What motivates the academic types, however, is much simpler. They're essentially angry that the North is cast in the role of villain after 150 years of insistence to the contrary. They're aggravated that Union soldiers are the objects of scorn and contempt, as well as the villains, in many works of popular fiction. They're not even honoured in the North much, anymore. It especially galls them that the Confederate Soldier, the supposed real villain of the narrative, is lionised as the hero. So much so, that even little boys in the deep North will choose to play with toy Confederate soldiers, over those of the Union. Confederate soldiers almost always sell out of stock at the dealers, if that says anything. Then there is the, at times increasing, popularity of the Virginia Battle Flag and other Southern Flags. None of this is within their power to stop or change, one wit. And that chaps their hides good.
