Famed civil rights lawyer jailed

Tupelo, Mississippi (Reuters) -- Brandon Gilmore, famed and flamboyant civil rights attorney and head of the Southern Social Justice Group, was arrested Friday evening at a campaign rally in Tupelo. Gilmore, a Democratic candidate for governor of Mississippi, and his assistant, Rodney Walstrom, were taken into custody by Lee County sheriff's deputies and removed to the county jail.

According to the arrest warrant, Gilmore and Walstrom face 32 counts for violations of state and federal laws regarding hate crimes, fraud, incitement, racketeering and money laundering. Investigators say that since the late 1980s, the pair has secretly financed and staged "hate" incidents they used for publicity purposes to increase donations to the Southern Social Justice Group.

Among the list of incidents determined to be fraudulent or financed by the SSJG were a spate of black church burnings in the Carolinas in 1989 and the infamous Louisiana State University "swastika" incidents of 1995.

Kincaid-Jordan Wedding

On June 4, 2002, Ainsley Anne Kincaid and John Mark Jordan were married in a traditional ceremony at the Forsythe Street Baptist Church in Verona, Georgia. She is the daughter of Kurt and Gina Kincaid, missionaries in Central America, and he is the son of Dale and Carol Jordan, all of Verona. Mr. Jordan, pastor of the church, officiated at the wedding.

The bride was escorted down the aisle by her brother, Shelby, to the strains of Pachelbel Canon in D Major, performed by pianist Vonnie McIntyre and the O'Neill Strings. At the bride's family pew, the pair paused and the brother of the bride gave her to their father, who accompanied her to the altar.

The maid of honor was Erin Dunlap of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Tommy Jordan served as his brother's best man, while Shelby Kincaid and Randy Stevenson served as groomsmen.

A reception followed in the church fellowship hall...

After a honeymoon tour of the southeastern states beginning at Jekyll Island, the couple will reside in Jacksonville, Florida where the groom and the bride's brother are business partners and co-owners of an information technology consulting firm.

Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of Mississippi with sustained winds of 120 mph. Katrina's powerful right-front quadrant passed over the west and central Mississippi coast causing a powerful 27 foot storm surge. The storm killed 238 people and did billions of dollars in damages. Waveland, Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian were virtually wiped out, while Biloxi, on a peninsula between the Back Bay and the coast, was particularly hard hit, especially the low-lying Point Cadet area.

Many famous landmarks and historic structures, including the area's floating casinos, were destroyed or extensively damaged. The Bird of Paradise Casino was lifted off its moorings and moved nearly an eighth of a mile inland. Beauvior, the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, a raised "Creole cottage" which was built in the 1850s and survived Hurricane Camille in 1969, had its galleries ripped away by the surge, but the building itself survived and the owners, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, will undertake massive restoration. The landmark postmodern office building designed by renown architect Joachim Delphin, and built in 1988 for the Southern Social Justice Group, disappeared without a trace. The building had been vacant since 2001.
